3 Shell House Chambers

About 3 Shell Chambers

3 Shell Chambers was established by Brian Austin and Sean Richter in 2016 with Annsley Kerr as Chambers Manager.

Aside from the unique architectural charm of Shell House, the location was convenient for regular appearances in the nearby South Australian Employment Tribunal.

Adam Hay joined chambers in March 2022 before commencing the bar reader’s course in October 2023. Matoula Makris joined Chambers in June 2022 and Kate Sheridan joined Chambers as a Bar Reader in July 2022 and a Barrister in 2023.

Shell House

In 1905, the British Imperial Oil Co. Ltd. was registered in London as a subsidiary of the Shell group to conduct its business in Australia. It was renamed the Shell Company of Australia Ltd in 1927. The construction of Shell House in Adelaide in 1931 reflected the company's strength and confidence.

Architecturally the building is notable for its interior form rather than for its external form. The interior is remarkably original with open stairwells, original lifts and lobbies, bronze work to balustrading, memorials, terrazzo work and largely original office tenancies on several floors.

The Shell Company's policy was always to favour local material first before obtaining what was needed from around Australia and before looking for British Empire products.
